Re: LAKE TOOLONDO - WHAT ARE YOU DOING GWM WATER
Strange the paper says 5000, yet every report I saw yesterday, said 10,000. Either amount is better than none though.
From the Vrfish, facebook page yesterday.
It was a special day at Lake Toolondo with 7000 new trout stocked into the lake plus an additional 10000 megalitres released by Ministers Jaala Pulford MP and Lisa Neville MP. Thank you to GWMWater and Fisheries Victoria for working with fishers and the community to deliver a great result for one of our finest trout fisheries.

Not really. It's catchment area is virtually non-existent and relies solely on releases out of rocklands to remain anything more than a mostly dry shallow swampducky wrote:Toolondo certainly seems to need a lot of water. Is it really that viable a lake?

The 5000 ml will take the lake to just over 20% full - fingers crossed that they are slow in shutting the gates!
Re: LAKE TOOLONDO - WHAT ARE YOU DOING GWM WATER
They released 10,000ml not 5000 and it will bring the level to 35% and an average depth of around 5 meters, this dry shallow swamp is one of the best brown trout fisheries in the world, even when it was at 7% capacity it produced Trout over the 3kg mark along with 40 plus cm redfin, if marketed properly it would attract Anglers from around the world, it is the backbone of the whole area and is well worth looking aftercobby wrote:Not really. The 10,000ml will get us through 2 summers it's a good thing I'm glad it's happening and hopefully they put more in future.

Regardless, if substantial rainfall is non-existent then Toolondo dies. No ifs, no buts. Rockands has a lot more riding on its survival and priority will always remain with it, not diverting water to maintain Toolondo.fishpod wrote:They released 10,000ml not 5000 and it will bring the level to 35% and an average depth of around 5 meters, this dry shallow swamp is one of the best brown trout fisheries in the world, even when it was at 7% capacity it produced Trout over the 3kg mark along with 40 plus cm redfin, if marketed properly it would attract Anglers from around the world, it is the backbone of the whole area and is well worth looking aftercobby wrote:Not really. I'm not against Toolondos existence, but the crying from the fishing fraternity over it's survival prior to the recent rainfall was farcical. You can't bleed a multifaceted reservoir with a need to maintain environmental flow to a natural watercourse dry just so (in my opinion the most over rated species of fish in the world) Trout can be caught by anglers

I am glad Toolondo will survive, at present, but, I understand it my not if drought conditions ensue.cobby wrote:Not really. Re: LAKE TOOLONDO - WHAT ARE YOU DOING GWM WATER
To put the 5,000 ml in perspective In the Grampians area Lake Wartook is overflowing, Fyans, Lonsdale and Bellfield are between 80 and 90% full, and Rocklands is 44% full with a weekly inflow at present of some 14,000 ml and currently holding 131,000 ml. Looking at these figures 5,000 ml is little more than 2 days current inflow into Rocklands (which will diminish unless there is more rain soon). On this basis 5,000 ml is far better than nothing but also is a relative drip in the ocean and nothing to make a lot of noise about. The 5,000 ml should take Toolondo to about 20% full.

IT WAS 10,000 ml.
Re: LAKE TOOLONDO - WHAT ARE YOU DOING GWM WATER
So what's wrong with wanting a world class trout fishing lake in our state, a lake that produces consistant results for the angler? Just because you don't rate trout fishing doesn't mean that everyone else can't have it, the anglers who fought to save it put there heart and soul into making sure the lake survived, did you know that during the drought Rocklands was releasing water regularily down the glenelg river which most ended up out to sea? Anyway, each to their own I supposecobby wrote:Regardless, if substantial rainfall is non-existent then Toolondo dies. No ifs, no buts.
