Only red shore crabs at Mornington

Are they those small ones?

They are about the same size as sand crabs but there's a size limit on them

Just checked, no more size limit on the red shore crabs. I might have been thinking about NSW... Grab a fishing guide from a tackle shop (it's free) or download the app from VFA

Ahhh, the old sand crab, bane of the surf fisho on the 90 Mile but very nice to eat. My son usually gets them when we catch a few. I've often stood on them when wading the surf, much to my surprise and the crab's too I'd imagine he he. They tend to burrow into the sand a bit. Many years ago I was fishing in a boat at Port Welshpool and there was an absolute swarm of the things. We were pulling them up one after another, often with two on the rig. We kept a very nice feed and enjoyed them very much - lovely! I'm only about a 15 minute drive from the 90 Mile beach but have been a bit too sick to fish much. Hope to get down there again soon enough and get in some relaxing fishing. A good thread this, thanks!

There was advice about hoop net size saying 50 or 60 cm max, but pretty sure it's now 77cm. Pls correct me if wrong.

Info from the Victorian Fisheries page confirms that it is now 77cm.

Hoop net
A hoop net is a cylindrical net open at the top, consisting of 1 or 2 hoops not exceeding 77cm in diameter. The net must not have a drop of more than 50cm. Nets must be labelled if set from a boat or left unattended. The label must float at the water's surface, and must clearly display the recreational fisher's full name and residential address.

A maximum of 2 labelled hoop nets (per licenced or exempt fisher) may be used or possessed in or on any marine water during the open season.

Closed season for hoop nets

Each year, from 15 September to 15 November (inclusive) you must not use a hoop net in any marine water other than Port Phillip Bay, Western Port, the Gippsland Lakes or any inlet of the sea.

Great Gummy bait cut one in half and cast back out.
