Snowy River To be Artificially Opened

Post by Whiskers » Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:48 pm

The Snowy River outlet to the sea at Marlo has been sanded in for quite a few weeks now.

Water levels in the estuary have been rising daily and is now at 0.8 mtrs above sea level and farming land has now been inundated.

Parks Vic. have announced that next week (probably Tuesday or Wednesday) contractors have been engaged to excavate a channel through the sand build up to the ocean which will release the backed up waters of the estuary and allow tidal movement again.

Due to the strong outflow currents which will occur with the opening of the channel boat access to the estuary from downstream of Marlo Jetty has been banned until the excessive outflow currents return to normal.

yes, heard this week sometime there was going to be a planned artifical opening ( blasted)
thats 3 systems down gippsland that they have opened artifically, hopefully they can also do the same for tyers and tamboon, but neither of them have high water levels. so i dont think it will happen.

Contrary to my post yesterday the Snowy River entrance opening has been bought forward a week and will probably be open sometime tomorrow.

I was at Marlo this morning and a bulldozer and digger are already in position on the sand bar. The machinery made their way to the bar by accessing the beach at Point Ricardo earlier this morning. Digging a chanel was due to start around lunchtime.

Depending on how well the excavation of the opening chanel goes the bar could be open by early afternoon tomorrow.

A system has to have high levels for opening it to be beneficial to the system

Yep I understand all that. But both those systems are full of weed and filthy water. Only way to get rid of that is to open and give it a good flush. But ofcourse that doesnt warrant an artificial opening

Apparently some years back (early 20th century) the entrance used to be right down the end of the estuary (past where the blue hole at French's is today). I wonder whether that was because the water used to be allowed to back up to the point where it could spill into the relic low lying parts of the estuary towards Pt. Ricardo, but now it doesn't do that because of artificial blasting / opening?

The river also has bugger all flow that it once did once the hydro project in NSW was built

New moon is just around the corner. The high tide will be high, the low will be low. That'll maximize the water flow.

Is there any reason why two rock walls cannot be installed to keep the entrance open all year round with a steady low flow ?
