Metung Fishing

Have you guys got any tips for Metung and or surroundings im going there this week and im hoping for Bream, Flathead, Trevally and Salmon. Should I use lures or bait?

I'm not an expert, but, have heard crab is the go
Sandworm is good, but, you could be plagued by undersize fish

Cheers man what can you catch on crab?

I'd say -- your bream, flathead & trevally
You could have a live crab or a cranker with scent, let that soak
Flick around something shinny silver for the salmon
Hopefully a couple of locals will log on
Remember though, I'm no expert

Stop in at Bairnsdale and get a box of spider crabs from 172 Macleod street, they will do the damage for most of the species in their and will keep away the pickers! Has sand worm too from memory.

Nice old bloke runs the business, seems to get the word on where the fish are biting

Yep! Dropped in on the way to my east coast trip. Used the spider crabs at tyers. Unfortunately yielded little results... however I don't think any bait (or lure) would do too well in the Gippsland lakes systems right now. They seem ridiculously over fished

I was fishing Paynesville last weekend and was very tough going. We tried every lure we had and ended up with three salmon which we caught on squidgy wrigglers. We camped at ocean grange and them three salmon turned into four really good gummies so ended well in the end. Good luck :thumbsup:

Yeah, good luck mate. I've fished Metung and the lakes a few times over the last few years and have never done any good. The Yacht Club jetty has been OK for tiny bream if that floats your boat but the whole system is pretty ordinary in my view. Better off heading further east to Marlo (I haven't fished Lake Tyers so can't comment on there), Bemm or Tamboon. Tamboon was also really ordinary last April due to the mouth being closed. We really need some heavy rain to fix up Tamboon and Mallacoota, but the Bemm sounds OK from reports. If you insist on trying Metung, take your golf clubs! ps. I'm talking lures only, haven't used bait in these systems for 20 years so that might work if you want to go to the "dark side". Maybe drop into the paint shop in Bairnsdale and have a chat to Peter Nord, he'll know the current conditions, or the bait guy as someone else mentioned.
