Lakes Entrance Report

Post by ango » Thu Oct 25, 2018 3:40 pm

With the full Moon I thought it would be a good chance to catch a gummy so I went down to Lakes for a crack. They should change the name to gurnard city because that's all I caught, I did not keep count but I must have caught 20 or 30, I ended up keeping a few for a feed because it looked like there was nothing else around (I got a few flathead as well but they were all too small to keep).

The photo is so anyone that does not know what they are will know for next time. Do not try to grab one or let them spike you, I have been told the pain is so bad you can just about pass out from it. When I plan to keep one I grab it in the mouth with flathead tongs & cut the spikes off with side cutters, than I gut them over the side of the boat while still holding them with the tongs, and fillet them on land. They are easier to fillet after gutting, I only keep them when I am desperate and can't catch anything else.

Cheer
Ango.

I think that's a Common Gurnard Perch - not a Gurnard as such:

There's heaps of species of gurnard. I think this type is the most comment in Victoria so it's just generalized as a gurnard

What he said. Not from the Gurnard family, from memory, it's from the scorpion fish family.

Just on the spikes, they do hurt, like getting hit on the finger with a hammer but for a few hours.
Dunno if the fish varies in strength but i know that people are effected differently.
Had a big tough mate of mine whine like a ***** all day..it was unbearable.
Another fella who is a bit of a sook got stuck and didnt complain at all.

I went west, fished 10 m out to 20m on the drift. around an area known as The Pines.

I’d rather fish in a puddle than fish around the pines. Try anchoring in 18 between the grange and the pipe if your after a gummy. And remember the early bird gets the worm

Simple solution, don't handle them imo! I'd rather just spend the dollar and buy another hook
