Well the water temp is still too low at 12.5c. September is never much chop down this way, offshore or in the Lake. The forecast was for pretty much flat calm and 20c with a sunny day.
Well may as well go fishing as a crap days fishing is better than a day at home.
Crossed the bar at 8am because it was too cold earlier. Tossed a coin and headed south to a bit of rock offshore from Metung. Drifted around for a while getting mini bites and hauling up a few of those pink finger print fish. moved to a few different spots and finally had a decent bite and a pinky type fight. Up came a nice rubber lip mowong. This was followed by a big blue leather jacket. No pinkies so off in search of another spot, zip, so another and so on for an hour. I was just getting ready to pack it in and head home for lunch when i had a nice bite and a bit of thumping, i thought it would be another mowie but no it was a 33cm pinky. Had a bit more of a fish on that spot for zip so went home for late lunch.

I'm gonna push my luck Sunday night. Hopefully a few early arrival pinkies are around the corals

When do the pinkies start to really fire up down your way?

The Pinkies run during Autumn and winter then go quiet around August. Big fish usually appear to the West of Lakes around the pipeline when the water temp jumps up in October. I would bet on a week before the October full moon as the time to start getting serious. Heavier gear and bigger hooks will go on as soon as I see 15c at the wave rider buoy.
When you see is around 20c the pipeline in 26-35mtrs, often goes quiet and the big fish are found on the deeper reefs 40-48mtrs.

Zippo at the 4 mile 6 mile and out deep. 5nm south of the bar off Metung on the inside edge of the reef seemed the only spot today. 32-35mtrs

or cutting wood which was the other job I had to do

Coincidentally, I was crossing the bar at Lakes around 8.00 am today too, I started fishing inshore hoping for a gummy but no action so I headed out to 4 mile, again, no action, so I went out to six mile and between the sergeant bakers etc. I finally got a pinkie around 32 cm or so but it was very quiet so I headed back inshore and ended up keeping a couple of gurnards to make up a feed, I headed in around 12.45 pm.

Great report. Certainly sounds better than my Thursday stuck at work in this little patch of decent weather.
