Gippsland for the long weekend

Post by wem21 » Thu Mar 01, 2018 4:48 pm

Hi guys!
For the labour day long weekend coming up we (the family) are looking to go to Gippsland with a pair of other families. For the ladies this is really a sit back and relax while also sightseeing trip, while for the blokes it's more of a fishing weekend. Having never been there before, can you guys provide info on rigs, bait/lures and where to fish?
Cheers

Crack a stubbie and drop an unweighted half peeled prawn close to the jetty pylons for bream.
Flick a few plastics deeper into the channels for the chance of a flat head..might even get spooled by one of these king fish I hear are around Metung.
Go for a prawn..the dark is around then :a_goodjob:

I've been having a look around metung for fishing spots on google maps, and the jetties dotted around metung look quite promising for bream, flathead, usual estuary species. Has anyone ever fished there and if so, did you catch anything?

Whenever i use to go up that way as a kid, i'd look at the fishing report accessible from the info centres up that way. Always had good success on Big Bream, Tailor & Flathead from it. http://www.visiteastgippsland.com.au/fishingreport
Not that it means that much.. but if gives you some direction

that report is from the 22nd of feb

Tonnes of good LB spots.
Tambo River for bream - head to the Cliffs section which is north of the highway bridge that crosses over at Johnsonville, or south of bridge towards mouth. Some big carp (5 kilo plus) in the Cliffs section as this starts to become more freshwater and you will see schools of carp swimming up and down as freshwater in top half of water column, and saltwater in bottom section of water.
Metung - Shaving Point jetty. Go to rockwall to left of jetty and cast about 30m out. There is a deep hole there - pinkies, mulloway if you're lucky and bream. Boardwalk along the road into Metung. Cast out towards weed beds about 30-40m out - whiting, leatherjackets and bream
Lakes Entrance - Post Office jetty for mullet, bream, trevally
Bullock Island jetties - bream, tailor, salmon
Mill Point in Lake Tyers, along the beaach for flathead
