Sth Gippsland Coast

Hope to have a report this time next week from some boat-fishing spots between Harmers Haven and Corner Inlet. Wind and tides will determine where we go. Any recent reports about good catches of squid, whiting, flathead, gummies, kingfish, etc, boat-fishing out of Yanakie, Waratah Bay, Anderson's Inlet, Cape Paterson?

I don't get down there often, and don't catch heaps, but over the years I've been able to pull up a lovely gummy from Anderson's Inlet (where Stevie's Gutter meets the main channel) ... big whiting from Harmers Haven ... nice trevally, salmon, snook and couta from Waratah Bay, launching from Walkerville South (tried for kings off Bear Gully but no luck that day.)

I may also call in at Powlett River to trap small mullet for use as bait. Screw Creek near Inverloch is another option. Both have produced at times, and you never know what will be tempted to take a live poddy (once caught a good snapper on a live poddy, under the Bolte Bridge in April, so they must be tasty.)

Any up-to-date suggestions would be appreciated – may lead to a good report in a week's time!

Cheers,

Graeme

Hi Graeme,
I haven’t fished there before, but I’m hoping you can help me out re launching from Walkerville Sth. Went for a drive there last weekend to suss it out. Should of waded out of the beach but I didn’t.
Holiday season - virtually no parking and no space for a boat and trailer - how do you manage that?
Low and high tide - does it make a difference?
Beach gradient - does it get deep quickly?
Is the sand soft or hard under water?
Got the weather conditions sussed for a beach launch but not the above?

Yes I read that; thanks. Good report. Last time I tried to trap mullet near the bridge I couldn't get a single one to enter the trap. This time I'll take a rod with a small hook as well as the trap.

Yeah it’s still a bit of fun considering it’s bait gathering!
For a cheap and effect rig I found the $3 sabiki rig from Kmart worked

Good luck

Just spoke to my mate who owns the boat. He said that, because the gradient is not as steep as a normal ramp, the main thing a lot of people have there is a third wheel on the front of their trailer so they can disconnect and, when necessary, push the trailer in and out of the water separate from the car. You also need a long rope to link trailer to tow bar upon retrieval. So unless you have a really small boat you can easily handle, it could be a bit of a specialised operation. I'd suggest watching a few others launch and retrieve before doing it yourself. And do it when the crowds aren't there.

Be very keen to hear of any reports of fishing around the Flat Rocks, Inverloch area. I beach launch my tinny out of there and have done pretty well on the whiting.

Didn't get the chance to fish by boat near here so I can't comment. I was told they've recently improved access to the sand ramp area.
