Yep looks like a schoolieYota wrote:Thanks everyone, yes some of the flatty tails was had for dinner last night, beautiful. Flour, salt n pepper, a little oil and butter in the hot pan and cook for 1 - 2 minutes each side.
Re the boat washed up on the beach, coastguard mentioned something about it getting lost in the fog that morning. I went out about 4:45-5:00 am that morning and it was obviously dark and no real fog that I noticed. It was my first time through the entrance and I could clearly see all the port, starboard and yellow warning markers.
But the boat that run aground was returning. I don't know what time. It may have been there already, and I couldn't see it in the dark on my way out.
Not a nice sight seeing any boat rolling around in the shallow breakers, let alone a big boat with 2 expensive outboards being washed over in the waves.
Attached is a pic of the little bities that were all over us. My number 1 dekky is the hand model.
Let us know what they are, maybe schoolies as Hosery said. They were only babies ranging from 35-45cm long.

Re: Lakes Entrance Report
Flathead ID.
Sand flathead. Dark spots and slimy skin that goes snotty when kept in the esky for a while. Blue Spot . Clean looking blue/green spots very similar to a Dusky but considered a separate species by fisheries. Most common on the beach around Lakes.Refer to fisheries to ID the difference between Blue Spot and Dusky Tiger flathead. orange / red spots . Most common trawl flathead , usual occur in large schools in the deeper water. 45- 200 mtrs Sandies do not keep well and go very slimy when stored together on ice. The flesh will start to leach a milky substance after filleting if they are not very fresh and stored at near freezing temp.
Best eating is the Blue spot with a pink clear looking flesh when fresh.
Tiger are also great eating, found in the warmer months in 40-50mtrs off lakes.

There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Re: Lakes Entrance Report
Went for a fish Sunday ...had a late start got to the pipeline around 10:30.
Fished in 45m for a few tiger flathead then went in closer to shore for one cracking snapper and a couple of pinkies.
Absolutely magic weather.
Thanks to retired for a bit of information earlier on in the week...legend. :a_goodjob:

Great catch.......For memory schoolies are great to eat not as strong in taste compared to gummies from my experience, but I haven’t eaten or caught a schoolie in over 18 years. But most sharks are pretty good it’s still flake.Yota wrote:Thanks everyone, are schoolies good to eat ?
