Walkerville South 25/2

Post by 4liters » Sat Feb 25, 2017 5:01 pm

After being tormented all week by constantly changing forecasts I made one last check on Fishranger on Friday night which showed a trip to Walkerville South chasing kings would be doable. There was predicted to be a change in the weather just after midday with a 20k easterly expected to blow in, that would leave me with 6 hours on the water, enough to justify the trip. Interestingly Windfinder did not have the easterly on their forecast for Liptrap so I'm not sure what was going on, but not wanting to risk getting caught out in crap conditions for the sake of a few hours fishing I factored the wind in and made plans to be in close by midday in case I needed to bail out in a hurry. I frantically packed the car and was in bed by 9.30pm for a 3am start and a 6am launch.

I got to the beach and there was a smallish break, easy enough getting out but something to be a little bit wary of coming back. The water was really dirty as well with visibility reduced to 1.3m. Possibly because of the water clarity I struggled to find the squid but eventually I was able to snag 2 and with a couple more vac sealed in the bait esky I figured that was probably enough for my purposes, and headed out looking for kings. There were no birds to give their presence away so I paddled down the coast in 7-10m of water sounding around for schools of fish. There were a couple of isolated arches but I doubted they were kings and headed on without dropping squid on top of them.

When I got to Bell Point I found a small school of fish, not very tight packed and didn't respond to a squid dropped in their vicintity. They must've been on the move because I lost them after the first pass and couldn't find them again despite 10min of circlework.

After that I trolled one of the squid north to the spot I'd found a school of kings on my last trip here. There must be something about that spot as there were some big schools of bait surrounded by one or two bigger marks which I thought looked a bit like couta. I worked the area with the squid again but had no interest. By now it was coming up to midday and the wind had started to pick up a little, not sure of this was the start of the forecast easterly blow I headed in close.

Closer in I drifted around with a bait on the bottom hoping to snag a whiting which would reveal where I could find them next time. The whole area in front of the beach looks like whiting heaven but the only ones I'd seen had been on my last trip in 10m of water when they sporadically latched onto my soft plastics. No whiting made an appearance this time so I'm still trying to crack that particular code; I did catch a small pinkie (released), some cool looking wrasse thing with spines (released) and another squid (dinner). A group in a tinny fishing near me got a nice flathead as I drifted by.

By this stage I wa getting pretty tired, I'd been doing cable rows Friday morning and those on top of the effort of paddling around all morning were starting to take their toll. I retrieved without incident, and alarmed an American who came over to check out the yak. He asked me if I ever had any trouble with big sharks out there, and pointing to a couple of snelled 10/0 hooks on 200lb leader I replied that the only trouble with them was that I couldn't catch any. He gave me a  look and went on his way.

All in all a nice day on the water. Still need to work on the fitness and losing 10kg or so would be nice because the yak is a little low in the water at the moment.

Great effort 4litres it seems that being in a yak limits your options for techniques due to space and the number of rods carried. Makes it for rewarding though when you get one.

Probably the biggest limitation is not being able to search as far and wide for fish when you don't have a precise mark to aim for. A boat in the same situation could have sounded all over Warratah Bay or around to Cape Liptrap but I was limited to about 4km from the launch and a top speed of about 6km/h.

In terms of gear I had my 10-15kg stickbait rod and a couple of 12-15kg overhead rods for bait fishing with whole squid, one near the surface under a balloon and another closer to the bottom. I also had a 2-4kg rod for bait fishing, trolling small lures and teabagging a sleeper jig when squidding, and a green Gomoku rod for squidding/micro jigging (if I'd remembered to being any micro jigs...)

So I can cover a few bases in terms of techniques and targets, I just need to be selective of what lures and jigs I bring because I don't have the luxury of space for a big wallet for 100s of squid jig colours or whatever. I also need to compromise a bit with my gear and go for things that can be used to for multiple targets rather than having specialised squid, whiting, snapper, micro jigging etc etc setups rigged up in a rocket launcher

Thats impressive mate I definitely under estimated the number of rods you can carry. Are you able to work a Popper whilst trolling your squid?

I did try a popper out the back but I don't think I was going fast enough to make much noise with it. My Williamson Jet Popper would've been better because it would still make bubbles but it doesn't fit easily in any of the tackle boxes I have on the yak. Because I have a paddle yak I can't cast and troll at the same time unfortunately.

Nice work man.
Crazy looking fish that one you got.
And ill let the more experienced kingfisherman confirm this.
But.
Kingfish don't show up as arches. So if you've been looking for arches all this time your on a wild goose chase.
They show up as squiggly lines. Google kingfish on sounder and look at the pics.
Good luck for next time

yeah, that's why I passed over the arches, they were probably just snapper or couta or something. I've seen Scott's photos of kings on the sounder and the school I saw last time looked just like that, but I didn't see anything like it today unfortunately. I dropped the squid around the schools of bait more out of desperation than expectation of a kingfish smashing it
