How Far Upstream does Freshwater take over ?

Post by poppy62 » Fri Nov 25, 2016 2:48 pm

Hi people
Have been commuting between Bairnsdale and Orbost this week Via Bruthen for work and while driving, I crossed the Snowy,Tambo and Nicholson Rivers...Which got me thinking...
My question is .. How far upstream from the mouth of these rivers does the freshwater take over from the saltwater ???

It depends on how much fresh water flow exists in each system

The Snowy turns 100% fresh about 400m upstream of the highway bridge. Same goes for the Nicholson, about 400m upstream from the bridge at Sarsfield. Theres a good fishing hole there, I've stopped there a few times when passing. Caught Carp, Bream, Bass and EP's from the same spot. I'm not sure about the Tambo, but it's definitely fresh at Bruthen.

Basically You can only guarantee it will be fresh when you get above the highest tide level. At Bairnsdale that is the old weir on the western side of Bairnsdale. You can go all the way up there by small boat.
We survey depth up the rivers to the zero line. i.e. the drying point at lowest tide. High tide is only 20-40cm above low tide in the rivers. You can look at our surveys here: http://gippsports.maps.arcgis.com/apps/ ... 39e7ec368c
You will need to zoom in to see details including depth at low tide. This map covers from Anderson Inlet to Mallacoota. It is the most comprehensive information available for these areas. Be aware that all the entrances to the ocean constantly change and we do not survey them regularly.(except the Lakes Entrance bar). You will find it very handy when visiting areas you are not familiar with. If you display it on a device that has GPS it will show your position.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Try it in some deep holes...

Greggo has plenty of experience knowledge of down that way and nailed it. The Tambo turns full fresh around the tambo upper primary school. A good tip if you google map a river, once you get to major silt (snowy river just north of the highway, just drive down buchan-Orbost road if you're down there and you'll clearly see it) or rapids it's generally fresh above it.
