Cape Paterson and Inverloch 13-14/3
I went down to Cape Paterson for the long weekend with the family and managed to get out for a sunrise fish on Sunday. For those who know the area, I went off the end of the rocks between Brown's Bay and Undertow Bay, about two hours after high tide.
I threw out a paternoster line with a gulp powerbait on one hook and a surf popper on the other - net result, 3 bites, no hookups and a lost popper to the kelp in 2 hours.
On the other rod I spent the time casting lures - mostly a 100mm hardbody and a Lazer 35. The hardbody had a follow from a large squid, but it showed no interest in the squid jig I sent in after it, so I went back to the lazer. Retrieving in just behind the backwash, I got smashed by a snook, which went 65cm on landing, and went even better for lunch!
Then, over the next 15-20 minutes I got three more attacks from snook. None hooked up, but it was fascinating to watch, as they all happened within about 5-10 metres of the rock ledge. The snook all attacked from below and from an angle from between 3 and 5 o-clock from the front of the lure, going for the belly (not the tail) of the lure which was why they didn't hook up - no trebles hanging below the body on a lazer. Then, everything went quiet so I packed it in for the morning.
The next day I took the girls to Inverloch pier for a morning fish. Saw a bloke pulling in an elephant fish as we came up, and another bringing in a salmon. We were only there for an hour, but I didn't get a chance to chuck my own line in. The girls kept pulling in undersize fish, losing the bait to nibbles and generally having an excellent time of it. 3 kids - 3 mini trevally, 1 undersize flathead and 1 micro salmon in 1 hour = happy kids and happy dad.

That fish in the last pic looks more like a sweep than a trevally...
My 3 girls are jealous, as we missed out on a trip to Rhyll jetty last week...
Cheers,
Mike.
