Donuts At gunnas

Post by cameronpatrol » Sun Mar 16, 2014 2:51 pm

Hi all,
Headed to Gunnas yesterday arvo, to try out the new spin setup.
No fish for me, one bloke pulled in a small salmon out of about 15 people there that was the only one we saw taken.
there was a prety nasty cross current, so we ended up walking towards cape shank a few hundred meters away from everyone else.
I soaked a bit of squid and kept flicking lures, but no luck there.
I had my daughter and my brother with his mate.
it was still a bit of fun and took a beer down as well.
We were waitng for some decent lightning but it never showed up, very very dark out on the horizon though.
So after giving up on the fish I thought I have a crack at pendulum casting lol.
I snapped my sinker off on one attempt but managed to find it.
So I had another go with a lighter sinker and then upgraded to a small/medum snapper sinker.
Not sure what size rod ive got maybe 12 foot with a all cheapo shakespear egg beater reel and some old chunky mono maybe 20kg.
i meassured one of the casts at 104 big steps, so maybe 100m.
Im think i need to check out youtube a bit more lol still i think it was ok for a first crack.
I had fun so thats all that matters hey.
cheers cam

If yeah u can be stuffed, i would get a a4 book and write down, wind direction , swell size , size of tide ect each time you fish gunnas , with that info you can more likely predict what is ideal wind , tide size , barometer is good for fishing gunna.
To many boats kayak, helicopter , catch a fish, catch a fish

You snapped off a sinker with 20kg line? That's interesting. I'd fathom a guess and say your knot gave way rather than the line breaking. If the line did break, there is a very good chance it was previously damaged. How big was the sinker?

Good conditions at Gunnamatta (in my experience) = light to moderate offshore, high or low tide, smallest possible swell, fullish moon. Overcast or Sun seems to have little effect. Obviously dawn or dusk is the best time to fish. I haven't really experimented with Barometric pressures but a rising barometer is the go according to almost all of the literature i've read.

apparently salmon feed heavily on a dropping barometer, some of my best salmon trips have been while a storm is building.

And during...I'd go along with that line, I've been there in absolute downpours at both gunners and portsea when the salmon were going utterly beserk..

FC posted a picture of someone wearing a yellow jacket sneaking down there when conditions were less than desirable. The yellow jacket wearer is assumed to be Carl.

Carl might even have a camouflaged secret hideaway down there.
