Mud island report 1/2/14

Post by aussie_fisho » Sat Feb 01, 2014 7:51 pm

Got to rye boat ramp at 5pm on Friday planning to fish over night for gummies, looked like it was going to be a night. Tried for a few a calamari to the right of the pier for 30mins, not a single squid. Headed out to fish a mark we got from Charlie miccalef above mud island, was a great spot, big drop of from a bank of 6m straight down to 14m, although conditions weren't best to fish the location, I swear as soon as we anchored the wind picked up and changed direction pushing us on and off the drop off. In the first hour not a single bite rocking around in crappy conditions. Then on the lightest rod we had had out ZzzZzz, the rod screams off, after a 30 min fight we get a nice bronzie boat side about 30kg and it bite me off as soon as we were about to gaff it. After all the excitement we had nothing but plagues of banjos and port Jackson sharks along with sea lice for about three hours, after the tide change we got a small gummy pup, released straight away. After that the action stopped and before we left got a Small seven gill which once again bit us off just as we got it to the surface. All up it was a horrible trip with no a single fish taken home.

At least you got a chance to go out and try, i would give anything to even hook a bronzie!!!!!!

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad

Can't complain to much, was lucky enough to get a glimpse of it, also forgot to mention, I actually used carp for bait after hearing it was good for gummies on a fishing show, to my surprise we caught the gummy pup on it and the seven gill

It was hooked up in the corner of the jaw, I just didn't play it right, think I pulled the leader across its jaw.
