Peninsula Fishing

Post by Clifford » Tue Jan 19, 2016 8:38 pm

Hi everyone, looking to go fishing throughout the next couple of days in the Rosebud/Sorrento area, in search of flathead and Whiting, just after some tips for bait and where would be the best spot to catch either of those fish, could possibly end up at a back beach if the fish happen to be on the go! Thanks legends!

Whiting = Fresh bait, rising tide, dusk. Cast at the sand next to a weedbed. Blairgowrie and sorrento are good places to start. Use squid jigs to try and get superfresh baits.

Flathead......pretty much do the same thing and bounce a soft plastic around while you wait.

Pippie/squid cocktail or just squid tenderized then cut into 1cm x 5cm strips (it's meant to look like a worm) is the way too go for bait.

For whiting the other baits to try should be bananna prawns from coles / woolies, mussels or cuttlefish / squid candles. Personally I like the pipi / squid cocktail.

Definitely take some banana prawns as backup in case you can't catch your own bait.

Pilchard chunks are good for flatties, you might get a whiting or two, but I wouldn't use them if targeting whiting.

If I was fishing from shore I would use mussels, shucked and cut in half, with a thin strip of squid as well, pinned through one end. Should help it stay on when casting. Try and land your baits on sand at the edge of weed beds. Size 6 long shanks, or 1/0 circles are the way to go.

It would probably pay to have a rod out with pilly on it while chasing whiting as you will be in for a chance for pinkies and salmon as well.

Bit of prawn floatfished a couple of feet off the bottom gives you a good chance of a trevally.
Cast, catch and put it back
