Squid fishing at night

Post by spikestar » Fri May 03, 2013 8:26 pm

Hi guys,

I been trying to squid during the night but I have never managed to catch anything. I mostly fish at Mornington. I had success with my jig during day time but not night. Should I be shining a light at the water using headlamp or should I get different jigs for night fishing. (Yamashita EGI OH Q LIVE glow body jigs).

Thank you all very much for advice.

Regards

many different theories. some use glow jigs, some use black jigs as these cast a better silhouette.

I wouldn't be worrying about shining a headlamp into the water. however its handy having one on you in any case

If you are not catching squid, there are a number of reasons, the first one is that there are no squid in that area at that time. Squid will move through an area as they choose, it may be before sunset or after.

Try changing jigs, I have been casting in an area and catching nothing, change jigs and bingo, I start catching squid.

That can be extremely frustrating, I have been with the gummy guru when he is catching squid after squid and I get not a thing.

I didn't think that those led lights would work, but obviously they do.

In my squidding experience, which is limited to a couple of years only, I have caught 80% of my squid either at daybreak (+/- 1 or 2 hours) or sunset (+/- 1 or 2 hours). I should point out that all my squidding has been land-based and usually in the shallower water of PBB so maybe that has something to do with it.

Land-based best time is that hour before dark. Probably say 30 minutes fishing time max before gets too dark. If they are around should get half doz or so.
** should note that I personally wouldn't bother getting in the car to go fishing for half an hour, but if you are already fishing...

Found a great spot with the old man recently, fishing all arvo for nothing he decided to throw a couple jigs just before dark... got a quick 7 and a couple really nice ones amongst them. Not really a weedy bottom more sandy... a big surprise.
