New to squid fishing - what jigs to get (sizes and colours)

Post by Brycei3 » Mon Feb 25, 2019 7:01 pm

Hi everyone,

I recently got back into fishing and setup with a squid rod + reel combo

I've already purchased some cheap kmart squid jigs and was wondering what colours and sizes everyone would reccomend?

I'm after getting some quality jigs and I'm after other people's experience..

I'll mostly be fishing bayside Melbourne piers/Mornington (boat and pier) and maybe Williamstown area.

hey mate and welcome to the sport of squid fishing, the colour and size varies on different spots and time of year. but a solid hint of what colour to use is to see what colour the bait is and use that. i like reds, whites and blacks. i vary my sizes from 2.5 to 3.5. western port you wouldn't want to use a jig under 3.0. port phillip you can get away with a 1.5 jig if you really wanted to. do some research get some jigs that will be suited for your area and then look at the answers from this post and choose some colours. Cheers Matari

Usually I use a 3 or 3.5 in western port but today a 2.5 done the job as long as you get the jig down your good.

In all my lures I stick to one rule.
Natural colours when the day is sunny and water is clear.
Bright colours when the day is overcast and the water isn't that clear.
So pack one green/black and one orange/red/pink.
2.5 or 3 in port phillip bay like everyone suggested.

You pretty much stole what i was going to post lol. :a_goodjob:

Good luck with the squid fishing Bryce, i am not a great squid fishermen by any means but it is a style that has me hooked. Other than a variety of jigs i think it will also pay off to visit as many YouTube videos on squid fishing as you can and try to learn about the different techniques that people use so that you can try them out and see what works best for you.
