Mono line 15Lb on a shimano 4000 reelLightningx wrote:Are you using braid mate?one2three wrote:Thanks for the reply.
Does it matter what kind of line is used for Squid jigging?
I was thinking of going around tomorrow morning around Sandringham at 9am as the high tide is 12 as shown here https://tidesnear.me/tide_stations/4094
Would you say that is to early and to cold?

I would get there at 7am. 1st light is more important than tide. Move round to BMYS once the wind picks up.
The reel is overkill but not the main problem - Braid is much better than mono for casting and jig action.
If you think you’re going to get into squid, use your current setup with a float and jig under it, and buy an egi type rod , smaller reel and put braid on it. Use 1+ meter fluro. I use 20lb to save me losing too many jigs

Hi,
Thanks for the tips and guidance.
I'm not from the area, where is BMYS is that a club?
I also have a shimano catana that I use for flatties. I might try that.
What weight jig is best for this area and what colour jig is suited for the area.
Thanks for the tips and guidance.

Each area has its own fishing patterns mate.
Generally, focus your efforts sunrise, late afternoon and most importantly Sunset as well as tide change.
Wind direction does not matter in terms of Squid on the bite. It can change the way you approach fishing for them though. If it’s too windy, more so than not you won’t be able to work the jig properly or have it in the strike zone (just above the bottom) enough.
I’d be fishing areas where the wind blows on your back and you have some cover, plenty of spots on google earth to have a look at all around the bay.
Better grounds are Frankston - Portsea.
Use quality jigs, but in saying that don’t spend $20$30 on them. Rui Jigs go for $10 and work very well, quality isn’t quite as good as a Sephia or Yama but it’s well worth it.
I always find a general rule of colour for me is all white, black and red. At the moment though I’m having great success using Pilchard patterns and dark orange, the colour doesn’t matter at all when it’s shnset. Squid come out for an agggresive feed.
Gear I use:
8ft 3-6kg Shimano Raider egi rod. 1000 Sedona reel. 8lb braid and at the moment 30lb Black Magic fluorocarbon so I can get my jigs back if I do get snagged, the heavier leader doesn’t seem to affect my catch rate at all.

You don’t have any smaller reels with braid on it?one2three wrote:Mono line 15Lb on a shimano 4000 reelLightningx wrote:Are you using braid mate?one2three wrote:Thanks for the reply.

People suggest to use leader and yes I agree but having said that I have caught heaps of squid with just a clip swivel straight to the braid.

Hi,
At sunrise what colour jigs are better suited?
So is tomorrows low tide still OK for the area?

I have fished different times of the day and the white has always done a lot of damage for me.one2three wrote:Hi,

What I tend to do is just switch the colours till I hook one then just stick to that

I will be using a Shimano Catana and I have a daiwa 2500 from a whiting setup that I will be using that reel or a Okuma SR40.
Diawa reel has braid 10Lb and the my Okuma SR40 has 15Lb mono.
Im taking the Diawa as I have taken it off the other rod and see how that goes.
I don't have any leader line, can I just use some mono that stronger/heavier?
With a Float and Jig spike does that require bait?
I got some of these http://www.jmgillies.com.au/product/squid-rig/ to try, why are the leader lines so long, very hard to cast? are they designed to drop off a boat?
Guys thanks for your help
