Cuttlefish

Post by Blue » Fri May 25, 2018 8:52 pm

Picked up a nice medium sized Cuttly today, always happy when this happens cos I reckon they are the best Whiting bait of the lot.
However, with the KGW a bit scarce at the moment, thought occurs to give it a try on the plate which I have never bothered with before. I have a nice thick steak, well cleaned and washed in saltwater, looks great.
Have checked thru google and came across a Thai grilled recipe which appeals, as it,s for Saturday night, thought I would seek the advice of our learned Forum for some veiws.
I await you,re suggestions with interest ( please don,t bother with the "cook with old boot etc, etc stuff)

When I caught one I just cooked it exactly like I would for calamari. I scored it, floured it and fried it and it tasted awesome.

Grilled goes pretty well. The meat is a little bit more tender than cala but similar flavour. Salt pepper and lime then onto the grill or oven, aim for a bit of char.

You can also run 2 skewers through the body to keep it from curling up when it cooks

O.k. Just to finish it off, the Cuttly steak got bbqd in one piece with splashes of fish sauce and lemon. Cross cut so it wouldn,t curl n lightly charred, all done quickly. Now agree with others that not much dif to Calamari and quite enjoyable.
Couple of thing learnt, use the barby grill more often for squid and remember to try on a skewer as suggested above.
Thanks to those who offerred a few suggestions to this major exercise.
