Arrow Squid

Post by Yota » Tue Apr 24, 2018 3:01 pm

Landed my first Arrow squid yesterday out from Dromana.
I've caught plenty of the regular squid - I don't know their proper name.
Anyway while I was cleaning all the squid I caught I noticed the Arrow was significantly tougher to slice up compared to the regular squid.
Are the Arrows just the same to eat or are they tougher ?

Cheers
Jamie

Not sure, but people always keep them so im assuming they are good. The 'regular' squid you catch are Southern Calamari.
Those Arrow Squid look nasty!!

According to Gts Hoon, the squid you buy in supermarkets is largely arrow squid. So it can't be that bad.
Just don't try to grab them by the back of the head, grab them right at the end of the hood, near the fins, they ain't gonna bite you then.

Arrow not as tender as cala, more aggressive; still very good as bait.
I don't eat squid from supermarket cos I reckon it's most likely to be arrow!!

Just as good to eat as southern calamari. If you find them tough soak them in milk overnight or mash up some kiwi fruit and mix with the squid. This should tenderise it just rinse off before preparing to cook.

Thanks everyone, no worries I'll eat it and his buddies (southern calamari) that I caught.
Yes he did seem pretty agro, put up a good fight I thought I snagged the bottom ha ha.
When I pulled him out of the water he had absolutely smashed the jig I was using- he had the hooks stuffed right into his gob - unfortunately for him it was a ugly job twisting the jig out.
