Squid bags and throw backs

Post by Labido » Mon Feb 19, 2018 4:45 pm

Hi there,

Does anyone know what the legal limit of squid is per day.
I know its 10 in victoria, but what happens if you start at 7pm-11:30pm and you bag 10.
Then you come back at 12am that night (theoretically the next day) and bag out again till 2am. Is this legal?

Also, are you able to throw squid/calamari back into the water if your not happy with its size ?

In the case of the unlikely event that fisheries officers would rock up at those times, how would you be able to prove that to them? I think it'd be a lot smarter to just stick to keeping a maximum of 10 per session. You don't need 20 anyway. Yes, why wouldn't you be able to release a Squid?

Yes, 10 is more than enough, agreed.
Just quering the technical aspect of how fisheries perceive bag limits.

With regards to throwing them back in.
A older gentleman told me they are damaged by rhe jigs after being caught and is illegal to throw them back in.

Ive seen plenty of fishing shows where the fisherman catches and releases squid of all sizes.
Also this should help you out
Bag limit: The maximum number of a particular type of fish that a person may take on any one day.

Possession limit: The maximum number of a particular type of fish that a person may possess at any time while in, on or next to Victorian waters. However, for abalone, possession limits apply in all parts of Victoria.

E.g. David is holidaying at a caravan park for the long weekend. He has 12 bream in his possession in his caravan from fishing for three days. David can have more than the possession limit for bream (which is 10), because he can demonstrate that he has been in residence at the caravan park for several days.

It's not absurd, it's the law.

Though the quote doesn't say he had to show them inside the van, just that he had been residing there(accommodation receipt would probably prove that).
