Cannibal squid

So this happened to me again. I had a big 30cm hood squid on today and because I didn't have a net I held it close to the pier while dad tried to grab it. Then an even bigger squid (guessing at least 40cm) popped up out of nowhere and grabbed my squid! Then it let go and swam away but my squid was already white and not moving any more. This is the 2nd time this has happened now except last time the bigger squid grabbed my squid while I was reeling it in and that beast would have been at least 50cm hood. Wishing I had brought a net, might have got the big one too.

Can never seem to catch those big ones on jigs though. Maybe one day I'm going to need to put a live squid out with some hooks.

Pics of the 3 bigger ones from today. The jig is a size 3.5 ebay cheapie

Great catch the squid get very aggressive this time of year believe its related to where they drop their eggs.

I once kept about 5 squid in a keeper bag in the water. When I went to put another in, I noticed the largest one (about 1kg+) had eaten half the head of a smaller version. Quite interesting!

Went back with a net this time and got the big bugger that killed my squid last time. She went 2.4kg, just under 40cm hood.
