Squid reports

Post by fishingvic » Thu Nov 01, 2012 10:54 am

It's been a bit quiet lately for land based squidding in the Northern end of Port Phillip Bay recently.

Hopefully the Southern Calamari will fire up again soon.

They are there but not in big numbers, so you need to be there on the right time, and you will need to cast and retrieve very patiently … good luck

Can anyone recommend a good spot where likely to catch any calamari using a Kayak on north west side of the bay? Im new to this and have not tried fishing from the yak before. Will try and go out this weekend. Any suggestions most welcome.
Thanks in advance

Got 6 at Mt Martha and another day and 4 at Safety Beach Yesterday.
They are starting to come on a bit more.
Caught mine on my cheapo red 3.5 jig and my Gamagatsu Orange (Aussie coluor).

Not sure about the spawning process for squid but maybe someone here can help as
when i was cleaning one of my squid the were heaps of these clear jelly like sort of bubbles.
Hope they weren't eggs but i think they might have been.

I hate killing any fish with eggs. Can anyone tell me how i might be able to avoid this in squid???

ended up with 5 calas and 1 arrow squid.

Best time was right on the high tide with relatively slack water.

hey St3vil.

yer these are eggs, right now squid are going through breeding season, hence why they are so agressive they are trying to protect their egg clutch and find a mate.Tthis is also why they are all together as they gather over reef in one big spawning agregation. but dont worry too much about taking them most squid die after they lay their first clutch, though larger squid will produce more eggs and therefore more offspring.

hope it helps
cheers marty
