Re: Squid Cleaning Tool
I have always done it by just shoving my hand in it and ripping out its head, but i must say it is good to see different Technics on how different people and nationalities do things.
I would like to see some day on this forum the art of cleaning and filleting fish, without loosing too much flesh and not getting any bone on the flesh.

I always use scissors. If you can bear to eat your calamari in strips instead of rings .... just cut the hood open straight down the belly, rip everything off it and pull the wings off. Much, much easier than trying to keep the hood intact IMO.
Re: Squid Cleaning Tool
I use an Egi rod because I have never seen such a waste of money to catch squid

If you were handy you could probably make them yourself, I'm sure bunnings would have materials you could use. I've been cleaning them for so long the ol skool way I don't think I can change.

Re: Squid Cleaning Tool
Depending on your style of squid fishing I can agree or totally disagree with this statement. Each to their own. Personally I like to use an egi rod and the Japanese style of fishing for them. Mind you, my egi rod was only $90 or so; they do have some ridiculously priced egi gear but same goes for all fishing gear.fishpod wrote:I use an Egi rod because I have never seen such a waste of money to catch squid
Great video, I guess they are going to be eating the head as well. Interesting.
I decided to make my own tool using a plastic spatula from the op shop (20 cents). Shape it up with a sanding disc. Mostly just to help turn them inside out and back again. All other aspects of cleaning them I don't find a problem. I like my squid in rings!!!

G'day Denis. Just wondering about the tool, seems pretty nifty , , , , do you use it and if so, how do you find it?
I clean land based caught squid by hand if I have 2 or more, if I only have one, it ends up as bait in the freezer. I sometimes use my large homemade dehooking tool that I made out of dowel and non slip grip tape to invert the hoods.
Just a question, if I may Denis. You scale and de-slime your Tings in a scaling bag , , , , I use a scaling bag also to clean the squid I catch off the Boat, it does an awesome bright clean white job. By the photos at your awesome cleaning station of the squid you catch and post, just wondering why you don't clean them in the scaling bag ?
Cheers, Bugatti
