During the past few weeks I’ve been scoring donuts at Sandringham, Warmies, Apollo Bay, and Inverloch, so I thought it might be time to turn my attention back towards Mornington.
Both high tide sun-up were due for 6am on Sunday, so I made my way down at 4’ish to catch the run in. Wow! It was busier than Bourke St... It was a struggle to find a spot on the bay side wall.
Well until sun-up it was all pretty quiet, and I didn’t see anyone else getting any action either. But as the light came up I felt a bit more confident to really wind up the cast and hurl the tackle as far as I could. So at 60+mtrs out I found myself onto a decent few bites. It seemed that if I kept the rod point held really high, and feed out some extra line and let the sinker fall straight down towards the bottom I could keep the pilchards right out at the 60mtr mark instead of it planing in and settling closer in around 40mtrs.
For my efforts, scored a nice 40cm Pinkie. I was very glad I took my net this morning. And as that Pinkie was being landed my large rod bowed down and I had to enlist help from the neighbors to man my buckling rod and the net. So, all in all, plenty of small flatties were landed , a few good strikes which I wasn’t quick enough to set, but one very decent Pinkie from Mornington Pier on a morning where for the number of fishos, I reckon it was on the whole very quiet.
Packed up and done by 8.30am, there were no more bites for the last 60mins.

well done man, thats a lovely pan sized fish.
If you are not already using circle hooks, then I suggest you give it a go. Its probably the best option for unmanned rods as the fish generally hook themselves and they generally are hooked in the lip, so they can be released easily if undesired or undersized etc.
