Re: Mornington help
Mornington depth vary from shallow to 24mt depending how far you go out.
I would recommend atleast 40mt of rope so rope can be on a angle so anchor and chair sits correctly.
Weather wise depends on the size of your boat ans how comfortable you like to be.
What size boat you have?

Re: Mornington help
I'd definitely be getting more anchor rope, 15 metres just isn't enough in most places.
I've only fished mornington a few times and stuck in relatively close for the most part. not sure what is going on there currently but I like the area between mt martha and mornington. If you jump on vyak there is quite a few posts referencing this area.

Re: Mornington help
I've launched off Fishies beach using the boat ramp to launch my PA14.
4m yak should be ok but it depends on your skill out there. Worst I've been out that part picked up to 18Kts with wind against tide then shifting with tide (very interesting ride back in watching speed on fish finder suddenly accelerating from 6Kmh to 9.5kmh in seconds.
Depending on what depth you're fishing determines rope length. But for PPB 40 is plenty off the yak. If using grapnel have a length of 10mm gal chain .5m-1m long with cable tie safety break off also.
Conditions you go out in depend on your skill sets & craft capabilities & how much you're prepared to tolerate.
As you're learning try team up with others with experience to give pointers.
Tide flow has never bothered me in the bay, although closer to the heads it would.
While learning try not going out if wind is over 7kts (my personal thoughts).
I trust you have practiced re-entries etc with your new ride?

Re: Mornington help
Sorry - Had to post in 2 parts I'm being blocked???
Practice also using your anchor trolley & which way works best for you. For me personally I prefer anchor in front with bow into current so I can either pedal forward while bringing anchor up & the point of the bow breaks the current flow. Some blokes prefer anchor at stern but not for me as I prefer forward control. Just make sure you never pull your anchor up side on in tide flow or wave action (especially in many WP spots otherwise everything is going over real quick. Make sure you can use a cleat to lock your anchor trolley to stop it sliding to the side when you don't want it.Get yourself a waterproof Lanyard for your phone, Triband VHF handheld radio, PLB to go with the other mandatory safety gear

Re: Mornington help
Keep an eye on the weather, I've found ppb to chop up far worse that wpb when the wind picks up, other than that ppb is generally easier to fish with much less current to contend with.
Bunnings sells 60m spools of 3mm rope which is fine for anchor rope, otherwise the lack of current means drifting over a mark is a definite possibility if you can't be arsed anchoring. Out wider in most parts of ppb drifting for flatties is a good option

Re: Mornington help
fishies beach mate, ive always seen atleast a few kayaks down there when im going past or fishing the area.you dont need to go far to get into some fish either.
drifiting is mainly what most of them are doing as well.
