Glad to hear you got out for a session and landed something.

Post dawn this morning was a run out tide at Mornington. High was at 530. If you started fishing at 730 you've started on the run out. You've probably missed the bite window for the dawn session and also for the tide change. This doens't mean that you can't catch fish, it just means that you're making life harder for yourself than it needs to be.

In theory, better conditions for whiting are during a rising tide at dusk and after dark until the high tide change. Using the freshest bait possible will get you the best result, and in my opinion the best bait is squid that you've just caught yourself.

If you want to fish dawn sessions for whiting, you're better off arriving before sunrise and fishing until the sun hits the water.

There are a lot of great squid technique vids on youtube so i'm not going to talk about that, but it's worth investing in a couple of quality jigs and a few hours into learning the EGI technique that's popular in Victoria.

Congrats again on the catch, the redevelopment at Mornington is one of the best designed and built fishing platforms in the country.
Thanks Dougie! I knew the tide wasn't ideal but I just wanted to go fishing :D the other information is very helpful thankyou. I was thinking that maybe frankston pier is a better spot to target whiting as there's more sand patches with weed?

I've honestly never caught a whiting of frankston pier, although i've never tried.

Cameron and I fished a rock ledge near Mornington and then inside the Mornington Harbour tonight for 15 squid and two pinkies. He got 8 i got 7. The squid are on pretty hard there at the moment off the main jetty, the little jetty and the bluestone wall and concrete pontoons.

With whitings I've always had luck around the corner from the rocks at Mount Martha. Caught them the last 4 times I've been there :)

Are the arrow squid worth eating or keeping for bait?
