I have had a similar experience with a local beach near my place. During he day and into late evening when it's a nice warm/hot day there are plenty of swimmers and activity on the beach. However after its fully dark and everyone has left I have found that there are some really nice fish to be caught :)

Congrats on the catch mate! If you could provide any further info that would be greatly appreciated as I'm from down that way and relatively new to fishing. KGW is the fish I've been targeting but so far have had no luck :(
