10/1/2016 luderick
Went for a fish with a mate a few days ago to a place we have had a lot of luck with the whitings in the past. With new rigs made and live pippies for bait we were feeling quietly confident.
When we got there bites started straight away but very small and we couldn't hook whatever they were. They turned out being a striped zebra looking fish.
After releasing many of those caught my first luderick but undersize at 21 cm. After that my mate caught a nice one and then so did I. There were plenty around but of course while the bites were happening the sinker of my rig gets stuck in between the rocks! While trying to get my rig back my mate hooks onto one that starts stripping line on the light gear so I go down and scoop it in the small landing net we had.
I put a new rig on and cast and on again straight away. Ended up with 4 nice size ones.
Heard they usually take sea weed as bait but on the day they were loving the live pippies. Cheers.

There were plenty of those moonlighters around. Must have released 10 or more. Some of them were quite large. Are they even edible? Protected species? Couldn't find them in the fisheries booklet.Snapper Snatcher wrote:Yep they are zebra fish and the other fish is a moonlighter, good fighters. Nice work.
