Heading out stick to the starboard side of the actual shipping channel bouys, between them and the middle bank (those breaking waves) down to bouy 5 before cutting in towards Flinders, or drifting across the other way towards Seal Rock. Doing that means you avoid the absolute worst of it no matter the tide, but basically the ground goes all over the shop from 35m-12m continually and it's a similar result to what happens in the rip with regards to waves. But yes once around the back of Flinders or seal rock it does flatten out a bit.

For anyone with adequate boating experience with some offshore experience going down the western entrance is a piece of cake. I think I've turned around twice, both times bouys 12 and 8 were under white water and vision that wasn't walls of water was sweet fa
Listen to this man. Avoid mchaffies and middle bank. The entrance itself is a non event. The dangerous ground is well before the entrance.
There's a bunch of bommies off west head too

Flinders rock? Go around. It's only 400m extra travel

I wouldn't like to go through any stretch of water at 14 knot winds against an ebb but most fishing boats will be built to handle it and at the end of the day it's a big open entrance, not a bar crossing. If your not a complete gung ho idiot then there's very minimal risk.... whether or not it's worth heading out there this time of year is a different question.

FWIW I've got a smaller boat and headed out the eastern entrance on a ebb tide with a similar hard wind against tide and felt safe. Once ya get past pressure swells it's always easy going.

glad i had a crack at it today, blasted straight up the main channel all the way out no worries swell was around 2-2.5m outside and a bit choppy but cant complain i got out there. set up in a nice spot I sounded up and sent the baits down, within 10 minutes up came a couple of I estimate 8-9kg gummies (my PB stoked) sent one back down as one was more then enough meat for me. got a heap of pics but this stupid forum will only accept the worlds smallest size photos bloody ridiculous
