Stony Pier

Had my first trip out in ages. Weather was awesome so thought I'd give it a go even though it was middle of the day. Tide was absolutely bombing through but had the place almost to myself so no tangles. Managed a couple of early snapper, biggest one was 35cm. Then hooked up something big and slow. Spent 5 minutes pumping and winding it almost into the pier when it woke up. Did a 60m run and then jumped out of the water. Eagle ray!, took me another 20 minutes to get it in, then had to scale down the ladder to unhook it in the water. Reckon it was 15 to 20kg. Cracking fight shore based.
Really good little session, hope to start getting out again.

Absolute nuisance when the monster eagle takes off during sunset and your fishing for gummies

Those eagles do go very hard. Last time me and my mate took turns with a large one at Phillip island. Eventually landed it after a long fight.

Nice catch of the pinkie snapper. I'm thinking of heading one of the nights this week on high tide for a gummy. Haven't tried properly for gummy so was wondering what rig suits. I have 20lb on main line surf rod. What line should I have on the leader and set up? Will try for squid on other rod whilst I hang the bait in for snapper or gummy. Any tips appreciated.

I run a lot heavier gear for gummies - not for the gummies, but mainly for the bycatch. Hook up to a big eagle during your peak bite period and you want to muscle it in and release it as fast as possible. Im not interested in being sporting, I just want to put the pain on as hard as possible and get back out after my target fish.

Having said that, this morning I still hooked something that 10,000 shimano egg beater, at full lock, on 50lb braid couldnt stop.
