Gummy Session - WP 4/5/17
So after a number of failed attempts to get someone to join me for a tuna session at Portland, I decided to have a go at gummies in WP.
Prepped the boat and took off.
On the way to Hastings I stopped by the tackle store to get some bait and tackle for the session. So I did!
Bought 1kg of pippes and a pack of KL hooks for whiting. (after being persuaded by the owner that whiting are fired up today)
Got on the water and started fishing various spots for whiting. After 3 hours of no bites I gave that up and settled for a cold Corona and some crackers on the deck lounger. Fell asleep and woke up 1hr later, to find my pippies still intact on the hooks! Awsome.
As the sun was slowly setting in the distance I made my way to the Western Entrance and dropped my gummy rods over with Banana prawns as bait.
Opened up my last Corona and waited for the rods to buckle over.
About 25mins later both rods start screaming and line starts peeling off the reels. Awesome - they are mine now, I think. Oh no, the anchor unhooked off the rocky bottom and took my rods with it as she was slowly drifting with the tide.
Unable to unhook them I cut the lines and lost both rigs.
Annoyed and hungry I pulled the plug and went home, stopping my fav pizza place for a rewarding feed after such a productive day on the water.
Next time I'm going Portland

Was it the bait shop at hastings? Never found them to be helpful..
Always buy my bait in bulk. Looken forward to getten my boat back from its service. I got some catchen up to do.
Just out of curiosity chrisabout, when you say the western entrance... how far out do you go and what time of day?
Ive just upgraded all my gear and am.planning some night assaults on buoy 6.

Usually fish it when the tide isn't running too fast so I can keep the bait down.

Shitty need about the whiting. Don't use banana prawns for gumbos unless you are in the shallows imo. Flesh baits like yakka/slimey/couta/pike/cowanyoung cutlets are the best.

Bad luck still would have been nice on the water. Personally I never purchase my gummy baits rather try and catch a few yakka, slimies or silver trevally.
Haven't had a whiting bash in a while so can't comment on their numbers.
