Squid Bash - Hastings - 23/4/16
With the whiting slowing down, and the water temp dropping quite significantly over the last few weeks, I figured there was buckleys chance of catching a decent feed of whiting, and it was time to switch targets to the inky residents of the port. After only getting one ting last week, but seeing multiple pillow case sized calas last week, and landing one after a follow up of a goat fish, in the mid 30's, I thought I was pretty spot on with my assumption.
I re-rigged everything during the week, in anticipation, I couldn't wait.
Come 6am and Dad and I were launching in the dark, in order to fish the sunrise, at a spot that typically fires up, leading up to the low tide. We set off, navigated the channel, and dropped anchor. Just as the sun was poking its head above French Island. Spread was out, garfish on a prong, which I had caught down at the local pier, a sleeper jig in the rod holder, and my egi set up in hand, working a jig in an arc around the boat. Dad had a similar spread. We also both dropped a couple of pippies down on a paternoster, just in case something was cruising past.
My jigs didn't get a touch, not a single squid, not one.
Luckily, we had dropped over the paternoster rigs, as they had barely touched the bottom, and it was on. One of the hottest bites I have ever been on, after 15 minutes, we were down too one or two rods each, as it was impossible to keep a bait on the bottom without either losing it, or bringing another spotted bones aboard. by 7:30, we had bagged out, and couldn't bring our rods in quick enough, without hooking and extra 5, which had to go back down to grow bigger. After this we head out deeper to try for a gummy or snapper, but were plagued with leatheries, slimeys and yakkas, after a couple of coffees, and an hour or so, we decided to call it a day and come in early, happy with out efforts.
Fish were from 35-45cm, with a couple of horses thrown in.
