Why loads of Garfish down there but no bites?

Hi all,

Today I went to Seaford pier with two friends thinking to catch some garfish.

We used fish oil plus bread crumb as berley, silver fish as bait, No. 10 long shank hooks, try 1m - 2m depth, we could see loads of them down there, but no bites at all. We only caught 1 garfish for whole day. We even could see the bait was just in front of their mouth, but none of them would like to get a nibble.

I did the exactly same way two weeks ago and caught 40 decent garfish in a few hours.

Anyone could tell me what was happening? it is because the weather or temperature? The wind is small, water is clear and calm, high tide, I am really confused.

Thanks,

I find when the water is really clear it can be a bit tough. As soon as u get a bit of ripple on it it fires up a little. I guess all u can do is fish as light as possible. Might be worth tossing out a bail closer to the bottom in those conditions.

When this has happened to me I've had success by casting out a bit further. It's like the closer they are the more spooky they are when the water is clear and calm.

Hi Sinsemilla, now I guess this might be the point. About 6 guys there were fishing garfish, but only one caught 5, and most of the fish are caught, just like you say, at where it is a bit further. My tackle is too light to cast it far away. Maybe next time I will try a larger pencil float.

Thanks
