What fish is this
So made the most of the wonderful weather today and took the kids tubing out from Patto lakes this morning. On the way out spotted a couple of Dolphins playing around out the front of Chelsea beach so moved in for a bit of a look as had 4 girls under 7 on the boat who thought they were fantastic. As we got to about 50 m from the Dolphins and switched off to drift the sounder lit up. Had a rod and some 4"pumpkin seed gulps on board so whilst the girls were enjoying the view above the water I tried to get into the action below. A steady stream of 6" pinkies came on board so all the kids caught one then this ugly looking thing came over the side and I have no idea what it is, any suggestions

Re: What fish is this
I think every forum and facebook page concerning fishing should have a photo of a gurnard perch, (not a true gurnard, or perch confusingly), along with a warning, do not touch the spines, as they venomous.
The amount of times I've seen this photo with the same question is amazing..

Between gurnard perch. Wrasse and standard gurnards you would answer 98% of these questions haha.

Gurnard. Keep away from those very poisonous spines!! Many anglers, including alot of charter operators won't even let them on-board they're that bad. Apparently good eating, but at quite a risk if they get ya!
My pop once got spiked. He packed up and headed in as soon as it happened, and couldn't remember the boat trip back to shore. He was very crook.

Thanks for that, yes all hands were kept well away and the little girls all screamed and ran the other way because in their words it was ugly, thought it might of carried a bit of a surprise in those spines. Dave

I have been spiked by one hot water as hot as you can stand it eases the pain. I normally do not let them onboard but I have a maltese mate who makes soup with them so if he is on board he looks after them I won't go near them
