Manage two this afternoon on the Patterson

Post by ChrisD » Sun Jun 22, 2014 5:35 pm

Managed two today, one Bream and one " I have no idea what it is" (any help naming it would be appreciated)
Plenty of bites when I got there, but after an hour it went dead. Stayed for another 3 hours with nothing.
Was still nice to just sit by the river and watch the boats going up and down

Still a nice day out , better than nothing. That small fish looks like a type of mudskipper, but it could be a tupong ?

Cheers , Rick.

The thing that sort of distinguishes it as a tupong to me it the eyes right on top of the head ( and it's size , looks like a baby one ).

Tupong are sort of considered like a full on freshwater flathead, although a totally different species all together, but very close in look as in the eyes on top of it's head close together / the colours and shape a bit also / but no where near as flat in shape as a flathead, also the tupong have bulging eyes and look a bit different to flathead in colour also a bit (mature tupong are usually a bit darker), and they get no where near as big as a flathead ( max usually around 30cm for a tupong).

A mature tupong can almost have the same colours and pattern of a flathead or of a cod a bit, except more brownish than green/goldish found on a cod, same patterns sort of though when mature. When they are young the body colour is lighter and a bit more close to a flathead colour, but the fleshy tail part is sort of 'see through' (making the guts easier to see as a darker patch on the fish).

They are mainly found in freshwater rivers when a bit larger, but they do move downstream to more brackish and even full on saltwater during spawning.

Really hard to tell from the picture, does look a bit like a Goby too as mentioned above ( it might be ? ), but those eyes way on top of the head make me think its a baby Tupong. I Get heaps of them in the local river around my way.

Cheers , Rick.
