It's important you put a stopper on your main line mate so that you can adjust the depth of your float. From my personal experience, fishing during the day the gars seem to be deeper and so I push my stopper further up the line to allow the baits to sit further down. I usually adjust it to sit around 1.5 metres under the water.
I have caught heaps of gars at night as well and find that after dark they are often feeding higher up the water column so I push my stopper down so that my baits are sitting only about 0.5 metres under the water.
Hope that helps mate

Great catch & feed mate, I've also tried Sunday for gars at Geelong for no success! But I guess I was too pissed to catch a fish! LOL...(BTW, you seem like very patient person)

Thanks for great help lightning! :victory:
I watched video but still don't know how to put stoppers on? Also the one I watch the float looks bit different to your one.

Cheers mate. I had to leave them biting on Sunday to go pick my missus up! That's just the way it goes isn't it lol  just when the fish come you gotta go!
I was thinking of giving it another go today but it's blowing a gale outside and heard the wind is only going to pick up more so maybe later in the week

These are the ones I use. Got them from anaconda.
Once you know how to do it it's very easy mate. Just thread your main line through the end and double your line over about 10 cm and then simply push the stopper over both the lines until it's on your single main line.

That's it mate. After that just thread the line through the top and bottom holes of the float then through the hole of a small ball sinker and then attach to a 3 way swivel. Then 1 or 2 size 12 hooks and that's it. I use fluorocarbon leader but it's not a must.
Let me know how you go

I know the feeling mate, my last salmon session of the surf was like that. There was fish a cast but I had to leave. May not be this week but when I have a chance wanna try for gars properly. Because last Sunday more like have a drink and laugh session with a mate, never the less good to get out. ;-)
