You shouldn't have any problems getting enough distance with that but if you do and distance is what you are worried about a metal might be better for you :)
Whats your casting setup? As in rod, reel and line

Your rod might not be the right design for casting light weights (glass rods don't cast light weights very well for example), or your line is too heavy, maybe your casting technique isn't great, or maybe its some combination of all of those. If you get a video of yourself casting in the backyard some people here might be able to give you some pointers.

But it did not feel heavy enough and I can't cast far with it.
I use a 3" plastic curly tail or minnow and I use 1/8 and 1/4 jig head if you having problems with casting stick with 1/4 or use small 10g metal lures like halcos or wobblers they work good as well, line is very important as well, I use 8lb braid and 50cm of 10lb leader, you don't need to cast far during the last hour of daylight, just cast as far as you can and work it back at a slow to medium pace. Hope that helps mate, good luck!

@Crusher,

Also take note of wind direction.
Everyone here has mentioned several things that help with further casting.

Braid line
Heavier weight
Casting with wind on your back
Rod type (Graphite rods are ideal for plastics)
Line diameter (Lighter lines = smaller diameter. Braid less diameter than mono)
A full spool of line
Casting technique (As 4litres said, take a video and someone here can help you, or go to youtube and research)

Sometimes you don't need to cast overally far to find the fish, if it's coming up to a low light period then they will be feeding closer in.
