my turn

Post by nick » Mon Oct 13, 2014 7:15 pm

fished st kilda pier last night and finally got a red.

we were there on sunset, started fishing at 7.30pm and was waiting in anticipation, we fished just after the bus shelter where i saw one get caught the previous evening, the weed was killing us direction of wind was pulling it in towards pier. fished there for about 40 mins for donuts so i thought we'll hit the end of the pier after checking for space we up and left our spot and set up or rods. i was busting for a **** so off i went after finishing i thought i'd go and have a look at new breakwater, and new marina entrance to see if any action was happening.

spoke to a few blokes who hadn't caught but mentioned big fish caught in the area last few nights, started to make my way back as i was coming close to our rods i heard my mate being very apologetic and i looked on the ground and there was my net full of a big red. he had caught it on my rod while i was gone. he said he had played with him for ages waiting for me to get back but had to reel him in. i was happy for him. the thing brought a smile to our faces we had a bunch of tourists all taking photos. after a few high fives and photos it was back to checking rods for bait.

started burleying the area and about 5 mins after burleying i hear my reels drag peel a bit of line just faintly, i had a fairly loose drag because i know there are big fish around. i pick up the rod a felt a bit of weight on it and strike and bang im on. it must have been mouthing the bait. after a nice fight i had my own red it went 2.6kg not as good as the first one which went 4.35 kg but still extremely happy was my pb landbased and finally can say i got a red off st kilda pier. a guy next to me caught one probably bigger than mine . saw a few more being caught on pier and heard quite a few screams coming from new break water

both fish caught on a full pilly 2 hook snell rig on running paternoster casting towards city.

when i was cleaning fish at black rock this morning the water looked so perfect for fishing the direction of wind had changed and the water was clean with overcast skies. no doubt fish were caught somewhere by those braving the elements.

look forward to reading reports, now is the time to get some off the piers cause when the water heats up they'll be gone.
