Raining flathead

Post by Pazzingp » Thu Jun 13, 2019 11:44 am

Launched from Altona Friday 7th on sunlight, had planned to try get a bag if Squid despite the merky water and realised that I forgot the box of squid jigs at home.. so went down towards point cook and tried a few drifts hoping for some 2.8 meter flatties and she was on! Bite after bite flatties after flattie, mixed bag ranging from just over sized with a few 40-45 cm, also heaps of toadies and undersized FH, ended up slowing down and bagging out and called it a day, perfect day on the water and was surprised of the non stop action considering the time of the year

Sounds like a top day mate!
I haven’t targeted flatties from the boat in along time.
Might give it a crack when the next opportunity arises!
How deep were you in?
Enjoy the flattie tails :)
Cheers

Sounds like a great day.

A couple of years back we caught about 60 flathead in a few hours in Altona Bay, drifting about 1 km south of the reef. Most were undersized, i think we only kept 3 or 4 just over 30cm that day (id have to check if i posted a report on it). But it did show how healthy the area is.

Used prawns and pilchards for bait, drifting between 2 and a half meters to 5 meters found that the shallower I was the more consistent bites were

Nice mate. I usually drift and get them in about 4-6 metres. Just wanted to know so it’s a similar depth. I find when I go deep they just get smaller

Ironic that is. I literally fished 7am til 1.30pm on Saturday drifting off Werribee South in numerous spots with squid and pippies and couldn't get a bite. Like seriously, 1 bite! On the other hand I landed a few squid to save the day.
