Altona Sunday Oct 15

Post by Yota » Mon Oct 16, 2017 10:27 am

Headed out sunrise the ramp car park was full before dawn and parked on the street.
Between me and No1 decky we landed 9 flathead from 30-37cm.
The whole time we fished in Altona Bay in about 7-8 m. Later while we were chasing squid in shallow and I spotted something floating in the water. It was a rod and reel - line attached to something still.
After finding the reel in working order and winding in and getting rid of about 10 kg of weed, there was a poor old ray still hooked to this floating combo.
Released the ray and now we have a very second hand surf rod combo with no owner. Probably the ray pulled it off the Altona jetty or breakwall.
Water temp was at 14.8 degrees.
Fantastic day.
No reds that far north - yet ha ha.

Next week the high tide and sunrise line up, along with the climbing water temp, I reckon the reds are knocking on the Rip door,

Thats a good effort, and good on ya for doing the right thing and releasing the ray.
Lot of reds are already in the bay as far as i know, just need the water temp to go up just that little bit more before the average joe starts to catch them, the switched on hard core mobs have already been catching some decent fish..
hopefully a lot more come in soon so we can all have a shot at them.

Thanks fellas, I just searched images and to me it looks like the ray was an eagle ray, i didn’t notice any dark tiger stripes or any motley colouring on the one I released, it was a coffee with milk colour, but it did have a raised box head on it ha ha.

If anything can pull a rod in the water it would be an eagle ray. Can you imagine the language it provoked..
