Fish Identity
Have been fishing the Maribyrnong River near Footscray Rd bridge targeting bream and no luck as yet. Hooked on to a little flathead which to me seems to be of the rock variety…could this really be??

Re: Fish Identity
Don't know if it's a flathead
The head on a flathead is usually flatter and the tail fin vertical
The fishes tail in the pic looks horizontal

Re: Fish Identity
Unfortunately I had to reduce the size of the photo to get it up…maybe not enough clarity for an accurate identification. Would a guppy have spikes on the rear of the head as well?

Re: Fish Identity
Tupong it is then. Otherwise known as freshwater flathead. Not sure about spikes either. But really did look like a rock flathead to me. Ticked the tupong off the list anyway. Cheers fellow fishos

I caught few of them in docklands a while ago.

Re: Fish Identity
Its def a tupong, I used to catch heaps of them in the maribyrnong in both fresh and salt. They say they are quite tasty if you get a good size one but they dont get much bigger than the one in your pic
