Yarra/docklands report 08/02/2020
Haven't done a report in a while but the yarra and docklands have been fishing well lately so I thought i'd write one up. Had a session with a bunch of mates yesterday, all of us caught plenty of bream and estuary perch, was about an even split between species. I got 20 fish all up on zman grubz and cranka crabs, most in the yarra but pulled some in docklands as well. A few small ones about but plenty of larger models in the mix, with an absolute donkey on the cranka crab near the end of the session (first pic), had some good runs on him and had to pull him out of a pretty tight spot between a ladder and a bridge pylon, lucky a mate had a net cause I wasn't too keen on lifting him.
Caught most of our fish on bridge pylons with plastics, just slow rolling or slowly twitching along the bottom did the trick, the estuary perch were aggressive and in tightly bunched up schools, when found you will usually get a few, at one point I hooked 5 fish in as many casts and then they vanished as quick as they came. I found a slightly more aggressive twitches get them fired up a bit more if they're just tapping and not fully committing, but for the most part you will get them if they're there. Bream were a bit more finicky and required a more subtle retrieve, particularly in docklands where I tend to favour cranka crabs slowly drifted around pylons, its clear water and they can be tricky to catch here, but its all worth it watching a 40cm+ bream come out and smash your lure. In both locations its all about locating structure and shade and getting your lure as close to it as possible, persistence is key and its important to keep moving, do that and you'll soon find yourself connected to some solid fish

Solid report and some helpful info there mate, good work.
What makes you pick the day you go fishing on the yarra and docklands? Tides, water temp, rains? or do you just go whenever you can?
Cheers, Anth

Haven't really got favorite times, tides or weather patterns in the yarra, I have caught them in all conditions imaginable, though I do prefer days with less wind just for my sake more than anything else. Rainy and overcast days can make them a little more confident in some spots but under bridges it makes little difference, I do prefer to fish docklands after extended periods without rain so the water is nice and clear, this makes them extra finicky but the fact that I can sight cast them and observe how they're reacting outweighs that. I also like early mornings for the topwater bite, was getting plenty on the topwater a couple weeks back, but lately they've slowed down a bit in that regard.Sinsemilla wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2020 8:13 pmSolid report and some helpful info there mate, good work.

Nice report and great bream! I think I actually saw you crossing the road near the Crowne Plaza hotel Saturday arvo! That stretch has had very clear water lately (comparatively at least).

Re: Yarra/docklands report 08/02/2020
Yarra Docklands bream on lure makes me feel like an idiot.
After reading this report, I went there this morning 6am-8am. Not even a single tap.
4lb fluorocarbon 8ft leader, 6lb braid, $300 rod reel, zman grub, ecogear, atomic, slow roll, hop hop, pause, super slow, twitch, top, bottom, mid, early morning, late afternoon .... you name it all. They all mean nothing.
Lost so many bream lures and to the point I can't afford getting (and losing) more.
I reckon I did like 15-20 trips there in the last 2 years or so, no bream caught on lure.
Sammy or any yarra/dock bream master here, I'd appreciate it to take me fishing and show me the tricks. I'll buy you a coffee or a beer, whichever you like. I just want one yarra/dock bream on lure!
