Melbourne Fishing Maribyrnong and Yarra River

Post by FlynnFisherman » Thu Mar 15, 2018 5:33 pm

Thinking of going down to Melbourne and having a fish in the Maribyrnong or Yarra. Never fished there before and honestly i'm not even 100% sure what you can catch there, i know (or at least i think) there are reddies, carp, bream and I've heard there are mulloway around the mouth of of the Yarra. Can any of you guys tell me what other species of fish there are in the rivers, what baits to use and where some good spots to fish are? Cheers.

Just do a search on this site. There is more info than you can poke a stick at in various sections.
I live near Edgewater and just throw a few worms and prawns in on a paternoster and usually get something. Others on this forum use a bit more science and effort.

Can generally find a few blues jerseys around the docklands pylons after a home game

Stick to the Barwon rather than drive all the way to Melb. At this time of year the elephant fish should be about and also the chance of a mulloway if your lucky. If its small stuff you are after there is bream, trevors and whiting near the mouth

I've fished the inner city rivers for over 20 years - if I was going to give one tip for someone new to the river, I'd say fish relatively shallow water near structure for bream. Bream love mud and sand banks (early and late) in around 0.5-1.5m of water. You will catch fish along the deep wharves and in the channel, but not as many in my experience.
