Keep or release ?

Post by Need-to-fish » Wed Apr 09, 2014 1:08 pm

Does anybody keep bream for a feed on a regular basis ?

I am no bream expert and have only just started to target bream I beleive that they are slow growing ( about 1cm a year) so I couldn't bring myself to keep a + 30 year old fish .
I have tried to attached a pic of my last catch , a 32 cm in the Newport area on Sunday morning, as with the other bream I have caught it was in less that 2 ft of water.

Bream are a decent table fish, for me purely C+R though.

Source please?

There is a DEPI release somewhere talking about not eating more than 3 meals a week from the Marybinong in particular.

Release. To me they taste like rubbish fished out of a sewage farm. Especially a fish around 40cm that is getting on 30 years old

And yes potentially Bream out of historically polluted places like the Yarra can and often do have high quantities of heavy metals and other nasties. It's not a case of 'poison, poison, tasty fish!' though.

I like the taste of bream, I reckon they're a good table fish! Have only ever eaten one caught in Melbourne though (st kilda pier), the rest have been caught in the gippsland lakes.

better than pinkies. Bream is juicy, and soft even when cold. Pinkies dry up and good only when still warm.
