Bream on Flies?

Post by Bugalugs » Wed Sep 26, 2018 9:10 pm

Hi folks - has anyone targeted bream using flies?
I'm heading down to The Bemm in a few weeks and thought I'd get out the fly gear and give it a go.
What sort of patterns have you used?
I'm thinking a crazy charlie or some clouser patterns, or maybe even a woolly bugger in black with some red in the tail.
Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers everyone
Neil

Dunno about bream. But my grandfather used to use the green matuka on flatties up in Bemm and other areas.

I haven't got into them on fly yet but it's one of my targets once the edge bite picks up a bit, it's probably worth looking at getting an intermediate line.
Hit up bwc flies or wye flys in nelson for some bream specific stuff but the flies you have mentioned should work.

Thanks guys for the replies - much appreciated.
I'm also thinking of using a woolly bugger with a red tail at night time, hoping to snag a perch or two.
It might work - it might not, but as they say - you never know if you don't give it a go

There use to be a guy that use to fly fish for bream in the Maribyrnong river in the Ascot Vale area, he use to use a fly with a shrimp pattern. I never saw him catch anything though.

I've got a few shrimp patterns being posted to me, so I'll definitely be giving them a go.
Any prawn or small minnow type patterns would also be worth a try.

At Bemm, I've caught all fish on the bottom with sandworm
Never saw a bream surface, but, I'm old school
If you go to Bemm, talk to Keith Fleming (If he's still alive), he'll know
Cheers Gra

Try some of the following, BMS in green, clousers, any larger nymphs (green or black), streamers, woolly buggers, any shrimp or prawn styles, laser minnows by Mick Hall.

It’s worth a trip to Aussie Angler or Hurley’s and ask them to show you a few more choices. Some threads on the fly life website too.

It’s addictave once you catch them on fly, you’ll also pick up EPs amongst the bream.

Wow - thanks guys for the extra info - very much appreciated.
I've caught a few perch in the Hopkins on wet flies - they say something with red in it is a good option.
I have a few crazy charlies and some other wet flies - I wouldn't be using dry flies for them. Anything in a shrimp, prawn or minnow pattern would hopefully work.
I head down there next Thursday, so I better get my "A into gear" and go see what I can find.
Thanks again
Neil.
P.S. - I'll be absolutely stoked if I get one on the fly - especially if it's one I've tied myself ...
