This time around i thought id post this report to let you guys know that i catch smaller fish too

Went out with my mate that fishes the bream tournament with me and was expecting to get into some decent bream. But the bream had other plans

I decided totry topwatet this time first and I tied on a daiwa slippery dog and first cast got my first top water bream. Only a rat but i was over the moon.

3rd cast i got my second on topwater also a rat.

We went on to catch in excess of 20 fish but all undersized rats with only one good fish for the day. Which came off my trusty atomic crank. Didnt measure him but he would be very very close to that 40 mark

Why do you stick your thumb up there to hold a fish ????
Would have thought that it would cause damage.

Cheers mate.
Thumb is behind the fish mate. Not in the gills.
Pretty sure he was talking about the other thumb!!!!!!

You are correct of course Purple, there will always be variation, it,s not a set rule.
However as an indicator it,s never too far away.
Check it out a cupla times, would be interested to hear results.

Does that weight amd measument rule only apply to bream or is there a different calculation for other fish?

It,s the only fish I,ve ever used it on mate, told to me a long way back from an old bream master.
Tested many times and always around about, using the theory, your 42 cm fish would have been somewhere near 1.2kg.
There are published tables of length to weight for all common Aussie fish which are sometimes used by clubs in comps,I,ll have a look to see what they say for Bream.

OK Had a look and the correlation is for Yellowfin Bream only (not that this should make much difference).
Their fork length 40 cm equation is 1.6kg, which blows me out the water eh?
I only fish for Bream once a year,at Bemm on the March long weekend so if we are lucky enough to pull in some biguns I will have a look.
As you are regularly after them, would still like to hear your thoughts.
Not wishing to make a big deal of this, it,s just another facet of our sport which is of interest to me.

Yellowfin Bream must be pretty different to Black Bream - at 40cm all the fish I've ever caught only weighed in around 1-1.1kg. I have caught a 1.6kg fish before, but it was 47cm long.

Thanks blue and bilby for the info, ill invest in a set of scales so next time i can check
But to pass on what i know, blacks always are heavier for the same size than yellows, but the yellows fight a lot harder for the same size as opposed to blacks, yellows are easier to catch on lures, blacks can be hard/almost impossible (depending on location) this is what i have been told, have heard and have experienced myself (limited yellow experience)
some of the fish i caught on the last trip would be pushing over a kg, they looked the part too, nice and fat!!!! you can tell usually by the weight of the fish as soon as they hookup wether its a good fish.

good luck blue on your annual Bemm trip, love the place. but a long drive for me for a day trip but that didnt stop me from doing it once, dont think it will happen again, besides my last trip to bemm ended up in donuts.
