A pretty failsafe option for bream anywhere is cranka crabs (find out what colour the crabs are where you plan to fish and buy one that looks a similar colour) and zman grubs or hurricane grubs in motoroil colour.
grubs ofcourse being the cheaper of the two.
Use a 1/16 jig head with a hook size to suit a 2.5inch grub and work it slow with plenty of pauses and very small hops.
This is where all those technique specific rods will come into its own.
A good 1-3 or 2-4kg rod with a fast action should be plenty though.
With the crabs its as easy as cast and deadstick it for a while. Then gently drag it across the bottom 3-5cm or so at a time. Then dead stick again. Rinse and repeat...
