What line are you running by the way? Generally longer and lighter leaders mean more bites but higher likelihood of bust-offs. On the banks theres not much structure for them to bury you in so you can afford to go lighter than if you we're say fishing around the bridge pylons. I pretty much fish 4lb fluorocarbon everywhere now. I only go up to 6 or 8 if I'm getting busted off a lot. You'll be amazed how much pressure you can actually put on fish with lighter lines - it's just a confidence thing.

what were you doing when the fish took the lure, try and replicate that next time your there. for cranks usually a long cast as sloth mentioned parallel to the banks and then slowly wind it back in, when the fish hit it, it will feel like a thud, and then the reel should start screaming, if the drag is set right, then just manoeuvre the fish towards you..
good luck. and let us know how you go

Thanks again. I was using 8 lb mono with a 3 meter leader of 4lb fc, Actually I think I am going to drag the missus down tonight for a 'river walk' I call it...ha ha ha. I will try the banks more as well. Thanks for the tips.

These no need to use a fluro leader on mono.

I'd just spool up with the 4lb fluro

Fluoro is less visible in water
Fluoro is more abrasion resistant than mono
Fluoro sinks faster than mono

The third of these characteristics may or may not suit the style of fishing the OP is doing but the first 2 certainly do.

Yeah, I am going to spool up with fc 4lb right through. Got onto my first pinkie on plastics yesterday in the Nong......so I am getting right into this spinning thing!!! It is addictive. Bait fishing just seems boring now..

Haha - welcome to the dark side. It's super addictive. As you get started I'd stick to three or four different lures and get consistent with them before looking at others. It's very easy to go crazy and end up with heaps of lures that don't get swum.

As a general rule of thumb soft plastics and blades are fished on braid with an fc leader. Hardbodies fished on straight through fc (or braid and long fc leader). Some people reckon on different rods too for sp and hardbody fishing but I don't go that far. If you don't already have the 4lb fc and you're going to be fishing hards and softs I'd suggest buying 6 - 8lb braid instead and fishing that with 4 - 6lb fc leader (4lb in the Nong should be ok).

I am going to have to get better at my mainline to leader knots. And I've never used braid. So, would it be safe to say fc straight through might save me some hassle for the time being?
