Bemm River in a couple of weeks?
Bemm River in a couple of weeks?
Hi folks,
heading down to the Bemm in a couple of weeks with a couple of mates for 5 days and wondered if anyone's heard how things are going down there?
We have a 12 foot tinny to fish from, so we're not restricted to land based.
I'll certainly be giving Mark at the Bemm Bait & Tackle a call before we go, so I suppose he's the best source of info.
I've heard the entrance closed up 13 days after it was recently opened, but hopefully it will be open by the time we get there. Then again - doesn't the fishing go quiet just after it's been opened? ... Not sure about that.
If anyone has any hints or tips, that'd be greatly appreciated.
I'll put up a report when we get back.
cheers
Neil

Re: Bemm River in a couple of weeks?
Thanks SparkyUK, pleasure to be here! - and yeah, perhaps I should have introduced myself before going ahead and asking questions ... oops.
But now that I'm here, I hope to share and find out lots of info with the people who visit here for their angling info (and stuff that's not necessarily fishing related as well)

For gummy's Go to surf beach number one ( it's sign posted ) in the late afternoon fishing into the night
use mullet for bait that you can catch in the estuary during the day, I butterfly the mullet before using them for bait
don't be surprised to catch up to 6 or more gummy's in a session
and maybe hook a toothy variety such as a bronzie !
cheers !

Thanks Hornet - I wasn't going to put the surf gear in, but perhaps I will now - if the bream/perch etc are a bit quiet I might pop over there and try for some gummies.
Do you get your mullet in a bait trap, or catch them by rod and reel?

Burley up around the boat ramp landings and you will get all the small mullet and small salmon you need.Bugalugs wrote:Thanks Hornet - I wasn't going to put the surf gear in, but perhaps I will now - if the bream/perch etc are a bit quiet I might pop over there and try for some gummies.

A light rod with little or no weight and pipi is the go, during the day there are bigger mullet in the surf.
Usually in the surf are big salmon in the morning and late afternoon with small salmon through the middle of the day to keep you amused
NEVER hit the Bemm without taking a surf rod !

Thanks Jim (Rod Bender)
I'll be down there 2 weeks from tomorrow (thurs) and will hopefully have a report up on here around a week or so later when I'm back and unpacked and settled back into normality again.
And Thanks too Hornet for the info. If I can't get to the surf, then the live mullet could come in handy down the channel as well I reckon.

The lake is very shallow with monster flathead, put out a small mullet or salmon under a float just off the bottom whilst fishing for bream, let it float about but make sure your rod is well secured, they are huge !Bugalugs wrote:Thanks Jim (Rod Bender)

Yeah I've heard there's some big flatties down there, but I've never specifically targeted them. This trip could be the time to do it.
I'll just have to be vigilant at keeping the mullet alive. Are there any cheap aerators around that would do the job? Might have a look at Anaconda, BCF, or even Big W as they might have them.
